Age-Group Triathlon

The Belgian Triathlon Age-Group Team offers all non-elite members a unique opportunity to compete at World and European Championships in triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon, winter triathlon, cross triathlon and duathlon and aquabike.

New Rules starting 2026!
To compete in any European or World Championship in 2027, athletes must have qualified in at least one selection race during the 2026 season. This qualification is a mandatory requirement for all participants.

Entry to 2026 European or World Championships

With a 2025 Selection Race

Did you qualify in 2025 for a Sprint or Standard distance? If so, you should have received a confirmation email. You can find the specific races for which your qualification is valid in our Race Calendar.

Without a 2025 Selection Race
2026 is the final year in which you can freely participate in all EC and WC formats and distances without prior qualification. The only exceptions are the Sprint and Standard distance triathlons; for these specific events, a 2025 qualification remains strictly mandatory.

Step-by-Step Guide: Registering for an EC or WC
Always consult the Race Calendar first; it contains all available information per race. For some events, registration and/or payment must be handled directly with the local organizer, while for others, it is handled through our organization.

  • Mandatory Registration with Belgian Triathlon: Use [this link] to register with us. This step is always required for every participation.

  • Registration with the Local Organizer: If indicated in the Race Calendar, you must also register on the website of the local event organizer.

  • Payment:

    • Pay the entry fees to the relevant authority (Belgian Triathlon or the local organizer) as specified in the calendar.

    • Pay the fixed contribution of €8 to Belgian Triathlon per race entry.

  • Follow-up: You can monitor the status of your registration and approval at any time via the Race Calendar.

Athlete Eligibility Requirements

To participate, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Nationality/Residency: You must hold Belgian nationality or be a legal resident of Belgium.

  • License: You must possess a valid competition license (via 3VL or LF3).

  • Official Kit: You must compete in the official national uniform (Belgian Triathlon).

  • Financial Standing: All payments must be cleared in full to be placed on the official start list.

Entry to 2027 European or World Championships

Currently only qualifier races are held for athletes who want to participate in World or European championships at the sprint and standard distance.

Qualifier races

The qualifier races are published on the Calendar. The qualifier races of 2025 are the competitions in 2026. In 2025 you cannot obtain a qualification of races in 2025.

Conditions

As an athlete:

  • Do you have Belgian nationality or do you reside in Belgium;

  • Have you not participated for another country in the last 3 years?

  • Do you have a valid competition license (via Triatlon Vlaanderen or LBFTD);

  • Participate in a European Championship/World Championship with national equipment (Belgian Triathlon).

The selection

  • Age-groupers are admitted to the European Championship/World Cup on the basis of participation and performance in selection competitions that were determined in advance by the national AG committee.

  • Per age group (from 16 years for the sprint distance and from 18 years for standard distance, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, etc.) there are a maximum of 20 places available for both men and women.

  • After confirmation by the athlete, registration for the European Championships/World Championships is done by Belgian Triathlon and not by the athlete himself. The athlete pays the registration amount to Belgian Triathlon.

  • The costs for registration (determined by the organization), clothing package, transport and possible accommodation are borne by the athlete.

Selection procedure

  • The athlete registers for one or more selection competitions.

  • The selection of the athlete is based on the category to which the athlete will belong in the year of the European/World Championship, even if the athlete participates in a selection competition in a different category the year before.

  • In sprint competitions, the first 5 athletes per age group (who do not yet have a starting slot) are eligible for selection.

  • With standard distance, the first 5 athletes per age group (who do not yet have a starting slot) are eligible for selection.

  • After participating in the competition, the (not yet selected) athletes will be contacted by email to express their interest in a starting slot (sprint or quarter).

  • The list of athletes who have already taken their starting slot will be published via the websites of both leagues.

  • Athletes who have been selected and have confirmed their starting slot will ultimately receive an invitation for final registration. This registration is binding and only becomes final after payment of the registration fee.

Entry to 2027 European or World Championships

New Regulations Starting 2026!
Participation in any 2027 European or World Championship is strictly reserved for athletes who have secured at least one qualification during a 2026 selection race.

In 2026, we are doubling the opportunities to earn an international starting slot. We are increasing from 10 to 20 selection events, evenly distributed throughout the competition season for optimal scheduling.

What is changing?

  • More Races: 20 opportunities to prove yourself.

  • All Disciplines: In addition to the classic Sprint and Standard distance triathlons, you can now qualify for every available format and distance within our offering.

Selection Procedure

  1. Registration: The athlete registers for a selection race.

  2. License Requirement: Only athletes holding a valid competition license (via 3VL or LF3) prior to their participation in a selection race are eligible to qualify.

  3. Age Group Categories: Selection is based on the international age category (16-19, 20-24, 25-29, etc.) to which the athlete will belong during the year of the EC/WC, even if they competed in a different category during the selection race the previous year.

  4. Roll-down Procedure: Via a roll-down process, the top 5 athletes per age category and gender (who have not yet qualified for 2027) become eligible for selection.

  5. Confirmation: Once an athlete has qualified, they will typically receive a confirmation email one week after the selection race.

  6. Validity: A qualification earned in 2026 grants the right to participate in ECs and WCs for the entire year of 2027, without any obligation or prior commitment.

  7. Monitoring: The updated list of qualified athletes can be found in the Race Calendar.

Exceptions to the New Qualification Rules

  • International Residents: Individuals not residing in Belgium, but who hold a valid competition license and can prove their primary residence is more than 300 km from the Belgian border, may continue to participate in international championships without prior qualification.

  • Podium Finishers: Athletes who have achieved a podium finish at international championships may be directly re-qualified by World Triathlon for the following year. These athletes often have the opportunity to register for the same format and distance at a reduced rate for a limited time.

  • T100 Events: Participants who achieve a top-10 finish in their category at a T100 triathlon automatically qualify for the T100 Age Group World Championships of that same year.

Notes on the New Approach

This new strategy is an evolving process. From a purely athletic perspective, it would be ideal for athletes to qualify for each format and distance individually. However, since qualification was previously only required for Sprint and Standard distances—with all other formats being "open"—these changes represent a significant step in the right direction rather than a final solution. Our experience over the coming years will determine what further adjustments are needed to achieve the best possible system.

Capacity and "First Come, First Served": Belgian Triathlon is entitled to a maximum of 20 starting slots per category and gender at international championships (averaging +/- 500 Belgian participants per event). To date, we have never exceeded 20 Belgian Age Groupers of the same gender/category at a single event. Should this occur in the future—which is possible given that these reforms make more people eligible—a "First come, first served" rule will apply to EC and WC registrations.
